House in Cala Canutells
Geography at its most basic level makes Cala Canutells a site with a great influence on anything that is found in it.
The architecture here can only be understood in terms of the place as a whole, based on and belonging to it. It may be based on other ideals, but these will always remain in the background before its dominant, imposing character.
The house in Cala Canutells listens to the murmuring of the place and responds by climbing the mountain of rock, coupled with the topography of the prism planes and enhancing their qualities through a series of contrasts: the arid bush of the emerging indigenous rocky soil, foam breaking against the cliff, the expanse of sea and sky, are the elements against which the architecture is measured, which decides to answer with clean lines, terraced planes and ragged holes that absorb the scenery.
The white concrete distinguishes each piece, a contrast enhanced even further by the character of the place. The holes are veiled by white painted steel blinds that when closed are placed between the views and landscape, framing it and interrupting the continuous view, which reappears on opening the blinds.
Access to the house is through a courtyard that divides the house into two separate parts. This operation divides the functions between the two pieces, in such a way that one serves the other. The courtyard is divided into two levels and provides access to the house from either of them. Once inside, the landscape appears in all its glory before the gaze of the visitor, always accompanied by the extension of the floor plan, leading away into the larger view.
The pool at the southern edge of the lower platform of the house adds water as an element in the service of architecture and defines the edge of the horizon, dissolving into it with a line between two waters.
