Principe Felipe Investigation

This centre for Biomedicine Investigation is placed next to the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia. The functional plan distinguishes between two main uses: an area devoted to investigation and another one to the services and the management of the building. The elements that form the building are related to the use that they have. The basement contains the service area and the three cubic volumes that emerge from it contain the investigation area.
The volumes are articulated by two glass towers that accommodate the main stairs and the lifts. The estate is accessed by two descending ramps: one of them is pedestrian which fuses together with the public square, and the other one is a vehicle access to the basement of the building. It is surrounded by a space designated for the public use, comprising of green areas and a paved square with an integrated laminar flow of water.
The cubic volumes locate only the scientific use. The coverings in these areas fulfill the technical requirements which are obligatory for that kind of use. The buildings are surrounded by a skin of translucent glass that is protected from de sun by a shell of aluminium slats that control the light.
The part of the building that contains the public spaces is warmer because of the used coverings, like wood and natural stone.
The character of the building is a succession of translucent volumes that try not to interfere in the environment. Their skin is continuous and gives unity to the whole. The windows are not appreciated from the outside and the slats wrap the entire perimeter, trying to give an abstract image and strengthen the shape of the building.
